Poisson Distribution#

Excerpt from a response on Zhihu about the practical significance of the Poisson distribution and why most events in real life follow a Poisson distribution:

@ctian: Let me start with the conclusion: The Poisson distribution is a limiting form of the binomial distribution when n is large and p is small. In other words, if the probability of an event occurring is p, then the number of times the event occurs in n trials follows a binomial distribution.

The Poisson distribution refers to the number of times an event occurs within a continuous period of time, and the time it takes for the event to occur can be ignored. For example, the number of times an electronic component is subjected to pulses within five minutes follows a Poisson distribution.

If you divide the "continuous time" into countless small intervals, each interval is independent of each other. In each very small time interval, the electronic component may either "be subjected to a pulse" or "not be subjected to a pulse," which can be considered as a binomial distribution with a very small p. And because the "continuous time" is divided into infinitely many intervals, the number of trials (n) is very large. Therefore, the Poisson distribution can be considered as a limiting form of the binomial distribution.

Because the binomial distribution is actually the simplest distribution of "occurrence" and "non-occurrence," it can describe a wide range of random phenomena in the natural world, so its limiting form, the Poisson distribution, is also very useful.

Sign Language is Actually Interesting#

Following the super-healing "You Look Beautiful When You Smile" by Miss, I found another interesting sign language dance video. What can beat the charm of cute guys! The next song to practice is "Curved Eyelashes"!

Acknowledgement in a Research Paper 1#

I have come a long way and endured a lot of hardships to present this doctoral dissertation to you. Twenty-two years of studying, a journey filled with hardships. It feels like a dream, as if it was just yesterday when our family reunited.

I was born in a small mountain valley, and my mother left home when I was twelve years old. My father was not home often, and even when I was too sick to go to the hospital on my own, he only left behind enough money to barely cover the medical expenses before leaving again. When I was seventeen, he passed away in a traffic accident, and I cried uncontrollably because there was no one to take care of me when I fell seriously ill. In the same year, my grandmother, who lived with me, also passed away, and I was truly helpless. She took care of me for seventeen years, but when she was buried, all that was left was a thin coffin. The other family member was a dog named Xiaohua, who guarded my father and grandmother's graves, but eventually disappeared without a trace when I went to the city for high school. My computer mentor, Qiu Hao, who was like an older brother to me, didn't live to see my college acceptance letter, and his caring wife also passed away before reaching middle age. Every time I visit them, each grave reminds me of how precious every minute of life is.

The warmth and coldness of human relationships, the separation and parting through life and death, undoubtedly bring pain and helplessness, and poverty can make one lose hope. With bare walls at home, doing homework or reading under the kerosene lamp was the happiest thing at night. If it rained, we used bamboo shoots to plug the gaps in the roof to prevent leaks. Before high school, my main source of income was catching eels at night, fishing on weekends, raising piglets, and renting water buffalo. During those years, I measured the water fields and small rivers within a radius of ten kilometers countless times with my feet. I was chased by dogs and snakes, fell into the water in the middle of the night, and groped my way back home in the dark because the car battery was flooded. I couldn't pay the tuition fees, but my father sold the eels I caught, and then bought meat and alcohol. These were all unavoidable things.

The suffering behind a person can still be overcome, but the dignity in front of others is extremely fragile. During class, I was often called out of the classroom by teachers because of unpaid tuition fees. I attended classes with wet clothes on rainy days, and there might be mud behind my buttocks. I walked barefoot on scorching hot roads in the summer. I shivered in tattered clothes in the winter as I walked through the long corridor to collect homework. These could be the last straw that breaks the camel's back. If it weren't for the cash prizes I often received after exams, and the opportunity to stick a wall full of certificates to satisfy my vanity, I might have given up long ago.

In the whirlpool of fate, I exhausted my energy to strive for things that may have been ordinary. Each turning point felt so involuntary. Fortunately, fate still had a trace of mercy. After entering high school, the school waived all miscellaneous fees, and Uncle Hu helped me with living expenses. After entering university, computer science finally became my career and hope, and I bid farewell to stomach ulcers and gastric bleeding.

It took two and a half hours by bus from home to the county seat, and I always looked forward to leaving the mountains. From Juguang Township Elementary School, Dayin Town Middle School, Yilong County Middle School, Nanshan Middle School in Mianyang City, to Southwest University in Chongqing, and then to the Institute of Automation at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, I can't remember how many times I felt that I couldn't bear the pressure of reality. Along this journey, my belief was simple: study hard, then go out into the world, and not live in vain. Life is unpredictable, and the future is destined to face even more complex situations. But because of these little things, I have the courage and patience to face any difficulties and challenges. My ideals are not grand, I just hope that when I am over fifty years old, I can return as a young man and have the opportunity to get to know the world again, not to let the hardships I have endured in this life be in vain. If I can also do something to make other people's lives better, then I have won in this lifetime.

Life Progress Tree#

I saw someone on Twitter imagining using Git for version control to record important milestones in life. In fact, at the end of 2021, I was inspired by Mia and posted a similar idea on my Moments, giving myself a version number based on my state at the time. Later, I discovered a GitHub repository that did the same thing!

@Hal: Tomorrow, I will create a code repository specifically for recording important milestones in life. Every time I set a major goal, I will submit a pull request, and when I achieve that goal, I will merge it.

When I saw this idea again this week, I thought about it and realized that it wasn't necessary to directly imitate it. Instead, I could use this concept to mimic the log-graph in Git and create a life progress tree, which is more flexible, intuitive, and visually appealing. It has already been added to the About page, hehe!
